Internal Care For Cats & Dogs
We care about your pet's health, both inside and out. This is why we are proud to offer veterinary internal medicine to treat conditions that impact the health of your pet's internal systems.
Veterinary internal medicine is the diagnosis and treatment of internal conditions in pets, including gastrointestinal disorders, breathing difficulties, heart disease, cancer and more.
If an internal condition is suspected, our team at Smith Veterinary Hospital will perform an examination, X-ray, and ultrasound using the equipment available in our on-site lab. Once your pet's condition has been diagnosed, we will share our findings with you and begin treatment as soon as possible.
Addressing Internal Conditions
Our team diagnoses and treats internal conditions in the following areas:
-
Cardiology (heart-related disorders)
Using the technology in our in-house lab, X-ray, and ultrasound, our veterinarians can examine your pet for signs of heart disease or other heart-related conditions and provide you with a diagnosis of your pet's condition along with a treatment plan.
-
Reproductive Issues
Our team of veterinary professionals at Smith Veterinary Hospital offers reproductive care such as C-sections as well as spay and neuter surgeries.
C-sections are used to help your dog or cat deliver her litter when otherwise unable to do so naturally. Spay and neuter procedures are used to decrease the risk of serious conditions like cancer from developing in the future and to prevent the occurrence of unwanted litters.
-
Immunology (immune system disorders)
Your pet's immune system is a solid line of defence against a variety of pathogens that can negatively impact their overall health. However, the immune system doesn't always work as it should, leading to immune-mediated disorders.
Anemia, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, hypothyroidism, allergies, and skin diseases are some of the most common immune-mediated disorders seen in dogs and cats.
-
Pulmonary Disorders (diseases of the lungs)
A well-functioning respiratory system brings fresh oxygen to each part of your pet's body while removing carbon dioxide. In pets, this system is also used to help regulate the body temperature since they are unable to sweat.
In dogs common pulmonary disorders include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), canine distemper virus, pneumonia, and lung tumours.
Some common issues in cats include asthma, bronchitis, parasitic worms, bacterial infections, and viruses.
-
Gastroenterology (digestive organs)
Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders are conditions that affect the pet's stomach and intestines. This can prevent them from being able to eat and digest food as it's meant to be.
Some of the symptoms a pet may experience with GI issues include blood in stool, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, gas, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and weight loss.
-
Oncology (tumours and cancer)
Unfortunately, it is expected that many pets will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their life. However, when diagnosed in the earliest stages, many cancers in dogs and cats can be treated with a combination of surgeries, therapies, and other methods.
In dogs, commonly seen cancers include mast cell tumours, melanoma, lymphoma, and bone cancer. While cats are more commonly diagnosed with lymphoma, feline leukemia virus (FeLV), mammary cancer, and skin cancer.
-
Urology (urinary functions, genitourinary tract)
Urology conditions affect the urinary system of your pet. This can include urinary tract infections (UTIs) in dogs and feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) in cats.
The urinary tract consists of the kidneys, tubes that carry urine to the bladder, and the urethra that conducts urine out of the body. Urinary tract disorders in pets are common and can affect any part of this system.
-
Endocrinology (glands and their functions)
Your pet's endocrine system is made up of a series of glands. The purpose of these glands is to produce hormones that help to regulate the functions of their body. When a dog or cat's endocrine system isn't working correctly, symptoms such as skin problems and poor coat condition can become evident.
-
Neurology (brain and nervous system disorders)
Veterinary neurology covers conditions that impact the brain and spinal cord of your cat or dog, as well as neuromuscular dysfunction. Common neurological disorders our veterinarians see in dogs and cats include seizures, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), and tumours.
Cancer Diagnosis & Care
Unfortunately, many companions are affected by cancer at some point in their lives. If detected early, many cancers in dogs and cats can be treated with a combination of surgeries and therapies to help extend your pet's quality of life.
Following your pet's cancer diagnosis, we will explain your pet's condition to you, discuss additional diagnostic testing if appropriate, and provide you with treatment options and prognosis.
Our veterinary team at Smith Veterinary Hospital is here for you and your pet, every step of the way.
In-House Lab & Diagnostics
Targeted testing, imaging and other diagnostic procedures play a key role in providing pet owners with an accurate diagnosis of their dog or cat's condition.
These tests and procedures are performed using the technology and equipment available in our on-site diagnostic laboratory, such as X-rays, ultrasounds, and endoscopy.
Once your pet's condition is diagnosed, our veterinary team will develop a treatment plan suitable to their needs and begin treatment.
